Our Founder

In 1969, Rolla J. Wilhite put down his roots in Somis, California with the initial plantings of Berylwood Tree Farm. Rolla’s passion for horticulture and growing trees was the driving force that led to the onset of Berylwood Tree Farm.

Mr. Wilhite studied botany, landscape architecture and horticulture at UCLA. He was awarded a State of California Landscape Architect License and a Landscape Contractor license in the early 1950’s and was an elected member of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Rolla was highly respected for his knowledge and expertise in the field of landscape design and installation. His insight and inspiration was sought by many, including botanical gardens, famous entertainers, amusement parks, high-rise developers, museums and, of course, other landscape architects and contractors.

A couple of Mr. Wilhite’s favorite sayings were “I just work here!” and “I’m just helping. Only God can make a tree!” His honorary stamp of approval was by giving his two thumbs up. Rolla maintained his landscape architect’s license throughout his working life, which was right up to the day that he passed into eternity on September 21, 2014 at the age of 90.
